The History of Nova-Kino

Nova Kino was founded in 1994 in Miami Beach, Florida by Mark Boswell in order to align avant-garde cinema conceptually, as well as technically, with the emerging digital revolution. The first Nova-Kino result was a five minute super-8 film entitled "KULTKINO" that premiered in 1996 at the ANTI-FILM FESTIVAL. The NOVA-KINO Manifesto was written in San Francisco in 1999 in preparation for the first major retrospective of Nova-Kino works at Craig Baldwin’s Other Cinema. Major influences on Nova-Kino are Dziga Vertov, Bruce Conner, Jean-Luc Godard, Guy Debord, Chris Marker, Doris Wishman, and Craig Baldwin. Since 1997, Nova-Kino films have been screened in over 25 countries and translated or subtitled into French, German, Russian, Finnish, and Japanese.

Influential members of Nova-Kino over the years include the film archivist Barron Sherer, sound artist Ben Wolcott, composer Curd Duca, writer Bart Plantenga, producer David Letourneau, writer Anton Koslov & art theorist Susanne Boswell.

Influental actors include Greg Shumann, Larry Robinson, Anders Lundin and Jason Shurte.
